Inspiration In The Everyday: HAYDEN RICHARDS
“Sometimes I like to pick up a camera, embrace the moment, then push the trigger. Gotta love the ocean!”
- Hayden “Rich” Richards
HAYDEN RICHARDS OVERLOOKING THE RUGGED COASTLINE OF HIS ADORED GREAT SOUTHERN BIGHT.
Surfer, former chicken farmer and self-taught photographer, Rich, as he’s known to his friends and locals, has made quite a name for himself in just a few short years in the world of photography. Considered one of the most distinguished surf photographers in the world, Rich was a two-time finalist for Nikon’s Surf Photo of the Year (2017 and 2018).
His photos are both stark, whimsical and capture the beauty of the sea and land in his native Southern Australia. Towering cliffs, pounding surf and a large great white shark population make Rich’s days far from typical. You can’t put your finger on what makes Rich’s photography otherworldly, but you know it as soon as you see it. Rich’s home, the Great Southern Bight, is now the source of his greatest inspiration.
The Great Southern Bight is a bountiful ocean of nutrient-rich water and is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. In addition to the amazing fauna in the area, it is also one of the most surfed filled corners of the world, with every nook and cranny providing a world-class set-up. These days The Great Southern Bight is in grave danger as the oil and gas industries have introduced plans for drilling. Environmental groups, surfers, fisherman, aborigines and residents alike have taken up the cause to enforce their right to keep their home and the environment in its current pristine state.
Thrust into a position to be a voice and to protect his home, Rich’s work has become a rallying cry for those advocating to protect this sensitive area of the world. The consensus among those fighting the drilling plans is that it’s only a matter of time before there will be a major oil accident in the region.
Politics, lawful stewardship and protests, and in the case of Rich, his visual storytelling, are all ways that individuals and groups are working to keep The Great Southern Bight just as it is. Rich’s point of view and captivating images showcase the realness of the beauty of the region and why it’s worth standing up to what could potentially create irreversible damage.
We are inspired by the work of Rich and his commitment to the cause. SEAHOLM is proud to stand with Rich and the Bight.
