Inspiration In The Everyday: BRANDON LILLARD

“It’s not always about the pursuit of gamefish, sometimes I’m just out here to take it in.  I forget I have all this beauty in my own backyard.”

Free-diving is an art that one fine tunes over years and countless hours of experience, attention and study.  It challenges human endurance and product capabilities alike.   At SEAHOLM, our watches go through rigorous testing.  We designed lab tests to exceed industry standards and push the durability of our watches.  But there is no better way to test their true capabilities than in the field.

We partner with people that we know will put our watches to the test; not just over a couple of days, but over months and years of use.  One of those people is Brandon Lillard, a globe-trotting waterman.  Brandon is an accomplished skydiver, BASE jumper, spear-fisherman, surfer, World Surf League water patrol and overall saltwater junkie.

Recently we tagged along with Brandon to see what a day in-the-life looks like and how his SEAHOLM® OFFSHORE DIVE Watch handles his lifestyle.   Brandon is based in San Diego and has the fabled Coronado Islands just south of the boarder at his fingertips.  A quick 16-mile run, and the cityscape quickly transforms into a land before time.

The four or so pinnacles that make up the Coronado Islands come out of the deep like jagged canine teeth. The islands are considered a marine preserve, for which, special permitting is needed to fish.  The islands attract an array of pelagic gamefish.  Hordes of baitfish  strategically congregate along the migration routes of several species.  The premiere quarry of the islands during summertime months is the California Yellowtail, also known to some as Hamachi.

We spent the day exploring the islands, enjoying beautiful landscape but focused on the pursuit of this prolific gamefish.

It can always be counted on that one can never predict what the ocean will serve up.  During our day, we were awestruck by a school of Bluefin Tuna in the 200 – 300 pound range.  We had a split second to try and get in among them but as soon as they arrived, they disappeared.   Missed on film, a memory is all we have to show for it, but what a sight.

Thank you, Brandon, for showing us around your local waters and for the knowledge you shared.
